Photographs of West Auckland beaches, black sand, wildlife, isolation and wilderness.
Piha's landmark Lion Rock is a volcanic plug. It was formed when magma hardened within a vent of an active volcano.

Muriwai Beach is the home to the only gannet colony in the region

Whatipu's caves were used for dances in the 1920s. Many metres of sand now covers the old wooden dance floor.

The Waitakere Ranges

dominate the skyline to Auckland's west. The beaches between the ranges and the sea are well known to Auckland's fishermen, surfers, swimmers, hikers and families.

On this website are a selection of my photographs. They're of the wild and unspoilt beaches and surrounds of “Auckland's west coast”. The photographs are from the more popular beaches;

Piha, Muriwai, Cornwallis and Bethells/Te Henga

. There also photographs of the more remote and less easily accessible beaches including;

Anawhata, Whatipu and Karekare
